Everybody is talking about Facebook now. The social site. The new application platform. The new web. Microsoft pays insane amount of hard cash for share...
Why?
I set up an account to see what's that. And I can't see the reason to use it. Not a single one. Can anyone tell me - why would I want to use it?
I was talking to a friend, avid facebooker, and it seems that everybody uses it because everybody else is using it.
I must be antisocial or something because it doesn't appeal to me at all.

As you already noticed: it’s popular coz it’s popular.
All the social sites and communicators rely on the user community. If you were a member of a site with extraordinary features but there would be no one else using it - what’s the point. A crappy site with millions of interesting people will probably prove to be of better value.
I believe it’s kind of a social law that once an idea gains enough followers it starts to attract many more (think: a snowball) for the sake of keeping up with Joneses.
The beginning is interesting. How a crappy site gets its millions of users?
Well, I think it needs something to catch on. Sometimes it’s enough to be the first of some sort - think about the ‘find your school friends of old’ - there’s one in Poland that gained a lot of members. Nothing groundbreaking.
Otherwise you need to have really good advertising to make for crappy website.
Do you use Facebook? If so, what attracted you?
No, I’m using other services. Why? They just happened to be there. My choice was basically random. I think I’m not in the target audience of Facebook.
